DEKALB® 8282S wins landslide in Bicol Corn Derby

Just months after the back-to-back win in the corn derbies in Mindanao and Central Luzon, DEKALB® emerges, once again, as champion in the recently concluded Dry-Season Corn Derby Production in the Bicolandia.

DK 8282S, with the tagline “Blockbuster sa Kita!”, bagged 1st place awards in all three categories, namely Highest Yielder (7.15 tons/ha), Highest Shelling Recovery (82.24%), and Highest Return of Investment (71%), outperforming four (4) other corn seed companies in the region. The Dry-Season Corn Derby competition was held in Brgy. Tinangis, Pili, Camarines Sur from December 8, 2021 – April 6, 2022.

During the harvest festival and corn derby, DK 8282S consistently stood out from the rest with its notable ear and stalk quality. “[DK 8282S] lang yung tanging variety doon na puno ang busal hanggang dulo, hindi nag bungal-bungal,” says Salvador Millares, Campaign Activation Coordinator in Bicol. Despite Bicol’s extreme weather conditions during the entirety of the derby—typhoon in December and drought during the first quarter of the year—DK 8282S was still able to produce excellent quality corn ears. Due to weather challenges, Millares also shared that the corn plants in the derby had no top dress—receiving fertilizer only twice—and yet performed quite well compared to competitors’ varieties.

What the corn farmers in the region appreciated the most about DK 8282S was its wider adaptability in wet and dry seasons – performing noticeably better than the competitors even during drought. The green leaves were also found attractive even though the plant is already fully matured. Not to mention its excellent combative property against Fall Armyworm; DEKALB® 8282S was able to maintain clean and undamaged ears and stalks.

Elias Grimaldo, a BLO, dealer, and financier from Iriga City, Camarines Sur says he puts all his bets that corn farmers will be satisfied with the yield that DK 8282S promises. “Itong DEKALB® 8282S, na-experience ko ngayong taniman na maganda ang ani, mataas ang shelling recovery, at matibay sa mga peste, kagaya ng Fall Armyworm; hindi siya inaatake. Dito kasi sa Bicol, kalimitan ay dumadaan ang bagyo. Minsan ang mga farmers, nahihirapan pagdating sa mga mais. Pero ang DEKALB®, talagang resistant po siya. Matibay po sa hangin. Dito tayo sa DEKALB®. Maaasahan natin ‘to,” Grimaldo adds.

Manuel Mendoza, another BLO and financier from Calabanga, Camarines Sur also echoes the same feedback with DK 8282S. “Sa napansin ko sa DEKALB® 8282S, umpisa sa pagtanim hanggang sa pagbunga at natuyo na, walang peste na dumapo. Wala din akong napansin na nabubulok na katawan. Sa susunod na taniman, hinihikayat ko kayo, gamitin natin ang DEKALB® 8282S”, says Mendoza.

Just a couple of months ago, DEKALB® also emerged as the top corn hybrid in the 1st Central Luzon Corn Derby with DK 8282S, and in Region 10’s Corn Derby Series with DK 8131S, DK 8899S, and DK 8719S.

These wins continue to serve as proof for DEKALB®’s commitment to significantly improve farmers’ yield “with its supreme performance, season after season.”

“Bayer is elated by these results; it shows the company’s commitment to providing the best varietal innovation to our Filipino corn farmers,” says Iiinas Ivan Lao, Bayer Crop Science’s Country Commercial Lead.

Lao also highlighted that in this period of high input prices and market uncertainties, farmers can rely on DEKALB® to give them the most out of every hectare of their land.  “Bayer's seed innovations give the corn farmers the assurance to get high potential yields and of good quality harvest. Bayer will continue to innovate and provide products and solutions that will maximize farmers’ yield potential, thus ultimately helping improve their livelihood."
